Regions Cup.

SSSC competed in the preseason Regions Cup Competition.  It was a tournament involving a group stage followed by a knockout phase.  The boys did very well, losing in the semi-final to St. Albans Vukovar. Even though St. Albans were undefeated for the last two years, it was disappointing to go down to them as we had many more goal scoring opportunities than they did.  We will meet them again twice this season and I am sure revenge will be on everyone's mind! 26/06/2005 Round 12 - Leros Vs SSSC 0-2

Today saw us playing Leros away, and the boys were eager to put right the wrongs of our Round 1 clash.  The match started with Leros dominating the first 15 minutes of the game.  They came close to scoring twice but were denied by our solid defence, a defence that has not conceded a goal in the league for 5 matches straight.  There was not much happening for us up front in the early stages of the match but our second serious assault on the Leros goal gave us the opener.  Judge played a pass from mid field to Bittu up front.  Bittu then played a ball to Shane Gill who was lurking in the area.  Shane, who seemed to have all the time in the world, then slotted the ball to the keepers left with a precision finish.  We were up 1-0 and Shane had his first league goal of the season.  It was a long time coming, well done!

We didn't do ourselves any favors in the first half by giving away free kicks in dangerous areas.  Luckily Leros was not able to capitalise on these gifts and it was 1-0 to us at half time.

We came out firing in the first half with most of the play coming from us.  Leros were reduced to playing the long ball and this tactic wasn't really working for them.  Against the play Leros crossed a ball into our area.  It was never going to be a scoring chance with the ball going meters above all their strikers.  Once the ball went out the ref blew the whistle and pointed to the penalty spot.  Leros had been awarded a dubious penalty for an alleged pull on shirt by Sat.  It was another case of the bad refereeing decisions going against us.  The Leros striker stepped up to take the penalty.  He hit the ball hard to the lower right corner.  Ranz was up to the challenge and pulled off a good save.

That was the last real save the Ranz would have to make in the game.  We dominated after that.  Shane made a run through the box and was fouled.  This gave us a penalty of our own and Rohit made no mistake.  He calmly placed the ball in the back of the net and sent the keeper the wrong way in the process.  That made it 2-0 and that was the way it stayed to the end.

Our team played really well today with limited players available.  Every player on the pitch made a contribution today so well done to Ranz, Deepa, Chandan, Sat, Jag, Ricky, Judge, Rohit, Harji, Shane and Bittu!!  Lets keep our run going...

19/06/2005 Round 11 - SSSC Vs Keilor Wolves 2-0

Today showed another solid performance from the seniors.  Rohit, Bittu and Jaji all put in solid showings this week.  The goals came from Deepa and Jaji, Bittu not getting on the score sheet for once.  Both goals came in the second half but the game was always going to be ours from the first whistle.  Our hearts go out to Shane and Harji.  It seems some dark force is preventing them from putting the ball in the back of the net in this years league.

The win today made it 7 matches in a row for the seniors without a loss (including Griffith).  Our last loss was way back on the 8th of May.  In the seven games we have only conceded 2 goals.  Our defence is the strongest in the league having conceded only 9 goals so far this year.  If the defence can keep up the good work we will be in good shape to make a late run at the championship.

12/06/2005 Catch Up Round - No Game.  Won Griffith Tournament!! See latest news section.

05/06/2005 Round 10 - SSSC Vs HNK Mostar 0-0

It was a good physical match today with neither team able to find the back of the net.  HNK Mostar were assisted greatly by the referee who I am sure was an uncle to half their team.  Ricky Gill took the refs votes today with a stellar performance on the wing.  The defence make it three weeks in a row without conceding a goal.

SSSC sitting pretty on 3rd position.  We really needed three points this week to be a mathematical chance of winning the league this year.  Are we still in the running? Only time will tell....

29/05/2005 Round 9 - SSSC Vs Footscray United 2-0

Bittu scored another two goals today taking his season tally up to 10 goals.  Both goals were the results of classic runs down the wing, the first being setup by Jag Canada and Jaji providing the service on the second.

The highlight of this day was definitely the barbeque after the match in honor of the juniors who won the Sikh Games 2005.  Special thanks to those who assisted on the day.

22/05/2005 Round 8 - SSSC Vs Alexander The Great 3-0

SSSC continued their winning ways today with a convincing win against the 3rd placed Alexander The Great (ATG).

SSSC never looked like being troubled today.  The defence held firm and the midfielders and forwards did their job sealing a comfortable 3 - 0 victory over our long time rivals ATG.  Many players squandered easy opportunities to put one in the back of the net.  Best on ground was definitely Bittu, who got a hat trick today.  He has relished his return to striker and has scored 7 goals in two weeks!

The defence also played very well with Jag Garcha and Chandan almost impossible to pass.  Ranz provided a bit of entertainment, intercepting a ball played across the goals with a Kabaddi style kenchi.

The level of skill and intensity shown today by the boys was very promising and it will be hard for ANY team in this league to beat them if they continue with this style of soccer.  This win takes the team to 4th place on the league ladder which is great considering we were 10th two weeks ago.  Amazing what a few victories can do!

WELL DONE BOYS!

15/05/2005 Round 7 - Carringbush Vs SSSC 1-9

The boys are back on the winners list with a bang!

The game today showed how simple soccer can tear a team apart.  We worked the one-two to perfection in the first half and it paid off with a number of goals.  Jaji and Bittu combined a number of times tearing holes in the opposition defence.   We controlled the pace of the game and it wasn't long before a ball fell to Pargy who was lurking outside the 18 yard box.  He thumped in a cracking volley from about 25 yards and the ball was in the back of the net before the keeper even had time to move. The floodgates were opened!  Jaji and Bittu both scored after beating the defence and running at the keeper.  Just before half time Chandan scored a quality goal after running up the right wing and putting the ball over and around the keeper who had come off his line.  It was 4-0 to us at half time and it was great to have put the game out of their reach so quickly.

The second half was more of the same, Singh Sabha dominating.  Bittu and Jaji took turns at scoring whenever they felt like it (it seemed that way!).  Carringbush were appealing for offside at every opportunity and it was quite apparent that they had intimidated the ref.  SSSC could have scored 15 goals today if the ref wasn't so whistle happy.  Bittu and Jaji both had great games scoring 4 and 3 goals respectively.

Defensively there wasn't much work to be done today (which we will never complain about).  We kept up our quota and conceded a silly goal which was a mixture of being too relaxed, poor marking and the fact our defenders were taken by surprise that the ball made it that far back...  Harj also displayed his defensive heading skills with a crafty one back to the keeper off a long ball.

It was long overdue but our finishing today was first class... And it showed in the score line.  The win takes us from 10th on the Table to 6th.  Hopefully with a few more wins in a row we can move up the table towards the top where we belong!

Also, Shane came on for the last 10 minutes of the game and did well, almost scoring a goal.  It was his first run since being injured at the Renmark Games and it was great to see him back on the park where he belongs.  Hopefully Navi can join us soon as well....

08/05/2005 Round 6 - Westgate Vs SSSC 1-0

The losses just keep on coming....

The game started at 10.00 AM as usual however a lot of our players didn't start playing until 11.  The first half was very ordinary with the basic skills eluding a lot of our players.  Even a 10 yard pass was difficult to deal with under no pressure.  We weren't in the game in the first half but did have one or two chances, the best falling to Jaj inside the box.  About 35 minutes into the half one of the midfielders was given too much space to run with the ball.  He lined up a shot and made no mistake.  1-0 to Westgate.

The half time break was a chance for the wake up call to be given to our players.  We went out in the second half a different team.  There was no doubt that we out played Westgate in the second half, but the scoreboard would not reflect this fact at full time. Both teams had their chances which were not taken.  The difference between the two teams at the end of the day was one kick from about 25 yards.

SSSC will have to win next week to stop the downward slide on the ladder (There isn't really much further down to slide!!). I am sure that the a win is on the cards soon...

Also, Jas (BSU) made his SSSC debut this week!!  He played well, as was to be expected of one of the best Sikh players in Australia.  It says a lot for our team when players of this caliber are willing to make changes to their plans to play with us.  On behalf of everybody thanks and you are welcome back any time.

01/05/2005 Round 5 - SSSC vs Old Pegs - Postponed.

24/04/2005 Round 4 - SSSC vs St. Albans VUKOVAR 0-5

It is tough being such a proud side to lose, and to lose 5-0 is a real test of character.  Without actually being at the game you might think that we were totally outplayed today.  This was not the case.  The boys on the park gave it everything.  There were stages of the game where we were untouchable but the soccer gods had deemed that we were not to score today.

What was really highlighted today was commitment.  Some people showed that no matter what circumstances they faced, they were willing to give 100%.  Heads did not drop and to the final whistle every player on the pitch gave it their all.

The injury list is still a big strain on our team.  We wish all our injured boys a speedy recovery and we hope to see you on the park again as soon as possible.  Until then, we will continue to do our best without you guys!

17/04/2005 Round 3 - Bye

10/04/2005 Round 2 - Central Park vs SSSC 0-2

Going into this weeks game confidence was high.  Central Park had been thumped 10 - 0 last week so everyone was a little relaxed.  The injury list was still unchanged and Bittu was not available this week.  Bally made his first start for the seniors having played a fantastic tournament in Renmark representing the champion juniors.  We went back to the old 4-4-2 formation this week to provide stability in the defence.

The match started off poorly, with nothing seeming to go right.  Central Park surprised the defence with a number of chances, including two one on ones, but did not finish them off.  At the 25 minute mark a defence splitting ball was played to young Bally, who beat the keeper to the ball and slotted it in the back of the net.  Then on the stroke of half time Harj headed in off a corner to make it 2-0 to Singh Sabha at half time. Though we were up there was not really much to celebrate. I am sure all those who saw the half would agree that we had played nowhere near our potential.

The second half was more of the same. A lot of shots, few on target.  To the defence of our strikers the opposing goalie probably played his best game ever, making numerous saves. It ended with no addition to the score board, 2-0 to us.

SSSC have their first win for 2005. Though it wasn't pretty, a win is a win and we look forward to putting all our wrongs right on the park during out next match.  A number of positives came out of the game with players such as Harji and Shane Shera stepping out of the shadows and making solid contributions.  Bally showed a glimpse of what he will bring to the team in few years. With a bye next week hopefully most of us will be over our injuries and be fully fit.

03/04/2005 Round 1 - SSSC vs LEROS 2-2

The first game back after the Annual Sikh Games is always a tough one and this years season opener was no different.  With an injury list longer than the Great Wall of China our backs were to the wall from the outset.  With only twelve available players available this week the team out on the park was obviously far from our strongest but the team went out with a positive attitude.

We were out for the three points.  The match started evenly with both teams struggling to get into a goal scoring position.  A few of our players were under a fitness cloud, specifically a goalie playing up front, which didn't help with the productivity at our goal scoring end. In the waves forward in search for the opener our defence were caught off guard firstly by a swift counter attack and then a cross which was not able to be dealt with.  We went in at half time down 2-0, but our heads were still up.

After the half time break it was all Singh Sabha.  There were surging moves forward but the ball just would not find it's way into the back of the net.  About 20 minutes into the half Jaj played a quality ball in to Bittu who hit it hard in the top right hand corner .  SSSC had their first and the momentum was well and truly behind us.  When Deepa scored the equalizer with 15 minutes to go all money was on our boys to bring home the three points.  However it was not meant to be and the game ended at 2-2.  It was great team effort by the boys who showed great team spirit and belief in each other.  A number of players stepped up and played very well.  Best on ground was definitely Bittu today, as was reflected in the referee's votes.

Some may have been disappointed with the draw, but looking back to last years season I think the point under the belt is a good thing.
