2006 Sydney Sikh Games Girls’ Soccer Report
By Amarinder (Rammu) Mann, Captain.

The day we were all looking forward to had finally arrived. Thursday the 10th of April the SSSC girls’ soccer team arrived in Sydney a day before the games were to commence. One by one the girls staying at the Rydges Hotel made their way to their rooms meeting the girls whom had arrived that morning. No one slept that night all feeling anxious for the day that followed.

Friday held our first challenge, which was getting out of bed. Once the girls were ready and packed we headed down to the car park ready to board the bus that would take us to our destination.

Our first game was with Sydney B team. We stepped onto the field with only 10 players, but that didn’t bring our spirits down, that just meant we had to work harder as a team. The girls played an extremely good game although we didn’t score any goals we didn’t let Sydney score either.

We had another game that afternoon against Newfarm, Brisbane. We fought hard against the reining champions. Melbourne 0-3 Newfarm. Although we were defeated we celebrated the fact that we played like winners for the girls have only been together since October 2005.

On Sunday we found we were having penalty shootouts with Sydney B team, being equal to them in points, to play in the semi-finals against Newfarm. There was a lot of excitement and nervousness in the air. After the first 5 shootouts we were equal Melbourne 4 – 4 Sydney. As you would know, sudden death was to take place now. Final score was Melbourne 4 – 5 Sydney.
We were upset yes, but our grief was soon overcome. In a sporting arena you either win or you lose. Only when you lose, you know you have the ability to better yourself. “The greatest achievement is not, in never falling, but in rising every time you fall”. This was our moment to rise.

Sunday night was the night of the Dinner Dance and rest assured it was an incredible night. It gave the girls a chance to, literally, let their hair down. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely and had a great time dancing the night away. The girls left before the night came to an end catching the bus back to the hotel. Once back in their rooms they started packing for their early trip back to Melbourne the next morning.

Our newly formed girls team will be competing for the first time at the 2006 National Sikh Games.  Hopefully the can go all the way and win the prize!!
